On 18 August 2025, the Minister of Employment and Labour signalled an intention to withdraw the 24 December 2003 ministerial determination that has, until now, excluded funds regulated by the Pension Funds Act, 1956 (PFA) from the BCEA time periods in section 34A of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA). Interested parties have 30 days to submit written representations, by 17 September 2025, to unathiramabulana@labour.gov.za.
In a landmark decision, South Africa's Constitutional Court upheld the Gauteng High Court ruling, in the case of “VJV AND ANOTHER v MINISTER OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND ANOTHER [2023] ZACC 21”, that Section 40 of the Children's Act is unjustifiably discriminatory based on marital status and sexual orientation. This decision stems from a court bid initiated by a lesbian couple, highlighting the Act's inequity in granting parental responsibilities and rights to children conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The judicial challenge drew attention to the Act's exclusion of "permanent life partner" in favor of "spouse" and "husband," which disadvantaged unmarried couples.

The 32 year old driver implicated in the horrific Boksburg Explosion on 24 December 2022, was released, and the public was up in arms. The explosion left at least 41 people dead when a fuel tanker carried liquefied petroleum gas failed to safely pass under a railway bridge in Boksburg. The nearby Thambo Memorial Hospital was also damaged and many of its staff, in its carpark were inured.
