Cheryl Loots began her legal career as an attorney, having been admitted in 1976. She then became a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1978. She was appointed Associate Professor of Law in 1994, and served the University in this position until the end of 2002.
In January 2003 she took up an appointment as the Head of the Civil Court Judicial Training at Justice College in Pretoria. In this capacity, she tutored and mentored many magistrates in civil court procedural and substantive law.
In February 2007, she was appointed as the Chief Magistrate of Randburg and served in this capacity until she was appointed as an Acting Judge of the Land Claims Court towards the end of 2010. She presided in the Land Claims Court until the end of 2012.
Cheryl’s primary fields of teaching, research and practice have always been civil litigation and environmental law, and she has published widely in these fields. She has now added land restitution and land tenure to her fields of expertise.
