Kate Handley holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSci) degree from Rhodes University, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and a Master of Laws degree (LLM – cum laude) from the University of Cape Town.

Kate has nearly a decade’s experience in general legal practice, and six years’ experience in environmental law in particular. She has advised a wide range of public and private sector clients on a variety of matters concerning the environment and sustainable development, land use planning, waste management, heritage resource management, natural resource management, and renewable energy. She has experience in the drafting and preparation of appeals in terms of environmental and planning legislation, the defence of criminal prosecutions for environmental crimes, providing advice regarding the designation of land as protected areas and other conservation-related matters, and the preparation of conservation management plans. Kate is also an experienced litigator.

Kate serves on the Executive Committee of the Environmental Law Association of South Africa.
