Donovan Avenant

Donovan Avenant is a Director at Thomson Wilks in the Durban office and an experienced litigation lawyer who has practised since 2003. His practice focuses on commercial and civil litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution, and he advises both corporate and private clients from the early assessment of contentious matters through to arbitration and court proceedings.

Over the course of his career, Donovan has acted in disputes across a diverse range of industries, including logistics, insurance, manufacturing, property, consumer goods, sugar production and education. His experience includes high-value commercial claims, industrial and insurance-related disputes, liquidation-related recoveries and property matters, giving him a broad understanding of the commercial and operational issues that can underpin litigation.

Alongside his litigation practice, Donovan advises businesses on the drafting and review of commercial and operational agreements, including lease and franchise agreements, employment contracts and workplace policies. He also has experience in employment-related matters, disciplinary processes and governance and policy development for educational institutions.

Donovan holds a Bachelor of Commerce and an LLB. His combination of longstanding litigation experience and commercial advisory work enables him to assist clients with both the immediate demands of a dispute and the contractual and governance considerations surrounding their broader operations.
